Mapping the Coast Guard aviation logistics business model presented many challenges, including identifying key processes and stakeholders, defining how outcomes related to strategic goals and objectives, and determining the level of detail to capture. This effort was complicated by the fact that many of the Coast Guard’s aviation logistics processes existed only in the form of undocumented oral tradition.
As VectorCSP’s Project Manager for Coast Guard Logistics Business Model development, Damien Walz developed a data capture/model development plan that involved:
- Aligning with client stakeholders to define the scope of the Logistics Business Model.
- Exploiting the knowledge of on-staff Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) to design the outline of the model.
- Coordinating hundreds of phone, face-to-face, and online interviews to capture current state information to populate the Coast Guard Aviation Logistics Business Model.
- Designing and implementing a model vetting process that includes several levels of client and SME review.
- Developing numerous performance and measurement reports from the model for client analysis and transition planning.
The Coast Guard Aviation Logistics Business Model has helped port the aviation model across the entire USCG enterprise. This transition is ongoing as the models are implemented nationwide.
Walz holds a Bachelor of Science in Communications from Frostburg State University and his North Carolina Teacher's Certification from Elizabeth City State University. He is completing an MBA program at East Carolina University.
